About Pitney Bowes (PB)

Pitney Bowes (NYSE: PBI) is a global technology company powering billions of transactions – physical and digital – in the connected and borderless world of commerce. Clients around the world, including 90% of the Fortune 500, rely on products, solutions and services from Pitney Bowes in the areas of customer information management, location intelligence, customer engagement, shipping, mailing, and global ecommerce. And with the innovative Pitney Bowes Commerce Cloud, clients can access the broad range of Pitney Bowes solutions, analytics, and APIs to drive commerce.

In 2015, Pitney Bowes acquired Borderfree (NASDAQ:BRDR), a market leader in eCommerce capabilities that helps clients grow their businesses internationally and reduce the complexities of cross border eCommerce. At the time of the acquisition, Borderfree generated $125 million in revenues, had over 250 employees, was headquartered in New York, and had offices in Tel Aviv, Dublin and Brighton.

The Opportunity

PB Borderfree is experiencing incredible growth, now selling to the tune of $500 million annually. The company’s services are cloud based and must comply with very strict requirements. So PB were not looking for machines, but rather for elastic and flexible methodologies that would enable them to increase traffic and continue growing.

The company’s R&D operation in Tel Aviv develops the next generation of its end-to-end global retailing stack. They were looking for automated testing solutions that would help them migrate from waterfall to Agile, start developing in SCALA, which is rapidly gaining traction among R&D organizations, and easily migrate their physical datacenter to the Amazon cloud.

PB’s R&D experts decided that they needed the services of Trainologic, a top technology consulting company, which they already knew had the capabilities to help them with these key transformations.

The Objectives

PB entrusted Trainologic with several key tasks:
• Migrate their automated testing arrays from waterfall to Agile methods
• Move from Java-based to SCALA-based development
• Easily migrate the physical datacenter to Amazon’s cloud
• Help them implement the changes among the company’s R&D teams of over 2000 developers around the world

The Approach

PB Borderfree became acquainted with Trainologic several years ago in the professional conferences circuit. They have been cooperating ever since.
The first step was to help PB with their automated testing. Trainologic provided training (conducted by Gal Marder, Trainologic’s CEO), implementation services and human resources.

The collaboration then expanded into the transition from Java-based to Scala-based development. Trainologic recommended to appoint an entire team that would spearhead the transformation.

Trainologic’s top executives helped PB with the technology stack, web servers, development languages, databases, delivery methods and more. They in fact helped the retail solutions company advance into the next generation of software technologies.

In addition to the training and implementation services, Trainologic put at the disposal of PB Borderfree several people who worked with the team, two of which were eventually hired by PB to work in house. Of particular mention is a Trainologic expert who in only five months enabled the company migrate their datacenter to the cloud.

Today, PB Borderfree implements Docker to obtain the elasticity they need to grow, and the monitoring and troubleshooting tools and technology knowledge that they acquired from Trainologic’s experts. Thanks to the technologies shifts introduced by Trainologic, the company can now leverage their investment in infrastructure.

Working in Agile, the company went from 25-26 releases a year to over 300, which is a major breakthrough. This enables the retail and eTrade giant to release smaller changes and fixes, more often and with less risk.
At the same time, PB are reporting 50% reduction in costs thanks to the test automation and Agile process flexibility. Moreover, when a new team begins adopting the new tools and processes, this is done almost immediately as the learning curve has been reduced thanks to Trainologic’s expert training.

The project was a company-wide breakthrough. It was so successful, that the Israeli group proceeded to transfer the knowledge gained to other R&D centers around the world.
“We’ve been working with Trainologic for many years and the results are amazing. Beyond their professional and technological knowledge, they have years of experience building entire teams and becoming full partners of each company where they work. They are really nice people.

The human factor is really key when working with Trainologic. They placed with us five university graduates whom they trained and qualified for several months. Out of these five, we already hired two. These are really strong people that bring a lot of added value to what we do here.

We strongly feel Trainologic are true partners and have our best interests in mind.” Eyal Yekutiel, VP Research and Development, Global eCommerce, Pitney Bowes.
